The Forbidden Kingdom is set in ancient China and follows the story of Monkey King Sun Wukong (played by Jet Li), a powerful and rebellious deity who steals the Dragon's Pearl, a magical object that maintains balance and harmony in the universe. The Monkey King's actions inadvertently free the evil demon lord, The Dark Lord (also played by Jet Li), who was imprisoned by the gods. To stop The Dark Lord and restore order, the gods choose a mortal, Wang Xudong (played by Michael Angarano), to be their vessel.
Wang Xudong, a young Chinese peasant, is accidentally chosen by the gods to embark on a perilous journey alongside Monkey King, an unlikely ally. Together, they are tasked with defeating The Dark Lord and retrieving the stolen Dragon's Pearl. Along the way, they encounter various characters, including the beautiful and fierce Princess (played by Li Bingbing) and the cynical thief, Malthazard (played by Matthew Fox).
The Forbidden Kingdom boasts impressive visuals, with elaborate costumes, breathtaking landscapes, and heart-pumping action sequences. The film's fight choreography, primarily handled by Jet Li and his team, is nothing short of spectacular. From the initial showdown between Monkey King and The Dark Lord to the climactic final battle, the action scenes are meticulously crafted to leave viewers on the edge of their seats.
The film's cast brings depth and charisma to their respective characters. Michael Angarano, as the innocent and courageous Wang Xudong, provides a nice contrast to Jet Li's wise-cracking Monkey King. The chemistry among the actors adds to the film's enjoyment, making their characters' interactions believable and engaging.
